Attractive. Intelligent. Gifted. Tell me you haven’t met anyone who possessed more of these than you? Someone just came in the mind, right? Three people just came to my mind.
Have you wished you were a bit more attractive? A little taller or shorter? Fairer or darker? Could sing or dance so well? Had those abilities? Born to a different family? Born in a different setting? Don’t answer.
Did God make a mistake with you? Were you a pilot project? Oh Shoot! Did God forget to add a sweet voice? Or was He tired when it got to your turn? The answer to all these questions is NO. The Psalmist gives a further explanation, “I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are your works, and that my soul knows very well” (Psalm 139:14NKJV).
God took His time with you. God did what God knows how to do best with you. You are the most magnificent, the most remarkable, the most wonderful and the most splendid being God has ever created. You are undoubtedly special. God was and is very intentional about you.
So what’s wrong with us today? People are doing crazy stuff to their bodies to fit in this world. From skin bleaching, height increasing, gender changing to you name the rest. My God!
Here is the problem. The ending line of the Psalmist’s word, “and that my soul knows very well” hasn’t sunk in. We have no idea who we are and what we are made of. So we are taking our definitions from the world.
This world which makes us feel like square pegs in round holes when we are actually round pegs. This world which makes us feel like cripples though we have all limbs intact. This world which makes us short when we are tall. This world with many definitions of happiness and satisfaction that destroy the soul and sadden God. It is beyond frightening. It is sad! Many are getting lost. With a compassionate heart, we need to reach out to them.
St Augustine said, “Men go abroad to wonder at the height of mountains, the huge waves of the sea, the long course of rivers, the vast compass of the ocean, the circular motion of the stars but they pass by themselves and don’t even notice.”
“God has given you nothing shameful, least of all, your very body, and its function.”- Neale Donald
You don’t think God realises that you and about fifty people within your community can sing, write speak, pastor a church, play the piano, run the same business yet created you? He did. With each individual comes a certain uniqueness tailored for a specific assignment. You are specific!
Don’t develop any low self-esteem, become bitter, insecure and envious because someone has the same gifts as you and seems more talented. You are specific!
Yet you cannot remain same. There is the highest you to attain. In fact, there is the limitless you till you die. There is more to what you see in your mirror hidden and untapped. Broaden the scope of your horizon and extend the depth of your vision. You can’t be anyone so you might as well get the highest point of you.
And then give your best to whatever you do. Ensure no one fails or suffers in your area of expertise as long as it depends on you. Get to the peak of you. It might be the highest peak in the world, your country, community, church or even family. What matters is you get there. Not to compete with anyone but to reflect the glory of God. Do it with the satisfaction that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are specific!
We aren’t too short or too tall for our purpose. We aren’t too dark or too white for our purpose. You and I are specific for our purpose. Anytime anyone tries to make you feel less of anything. Tell them, “I know what you are trying to do. It won’t work because I am specific!” Be Inspired!
